New Edit about allotments……

Posted in Working towards an MA on June 21, 2009 by karenloiswhiteread

Got a call from the people at Enfield council requesting a new film edit  about allotments from the research that I conducted last term through the ‘Growingroom’ project. I had previously put a section in the original film about allotments but they edited it out at the early stagesas as they didn’t need the info for that particular project,  I was a bit miffed about it at the time as It was an area that interested me and a subject that  really fired people up, especially those living in flats with no access to a garden.

Billingsgate Fish Market

Went for a drink last night with the broad left group of Unite the Union and met Brian again,  a fish porter from Billingsgate fish market. Billingsgate is a workplace with very strong union traditions (closed shop I believe), which are going to be challenged next week at a court hearing .

We got talking about the history of the place and the working rules and regulations (very interesting) some of the porters have been working there for more than 30 years.

I will be going down there at 3am one day next week to have a look around to try and find an angle for a film, Brian is the convener there and will be able to get me full access to all areas, could be the project I am looking for to work on for next years MA project!

Youth Ground

The Youth Ground Exhibition that I have been working on this turm with a group of young people from south London was a great success last Friday. They will all pass their Silver Arts Award because they worked really well as a team and produced a professional exhibition that could have been shown in any gallery. I am so proud of them all.

Going Going Gone

Spent so much time getting everything ready for assesment, thought I had covered all angles, spare projector, spare DVD player, checked out the room and left home at 6am to miss the traffic (due to tube strike) up the workers! and all that. What I hadn’t bargained for was the room I had booked being in the state it was (cleaning it took almst 20 mins) and it still stank of sour milk. Only had 10 mins to put together the 4 projectors and install the sculptures and set up the DVD players. As a result I was diapointed by the outcome. The heads were not projected how I wanted them and the sound levels weren’t right. In my panic I also forgot to document it  all in all disapointing. Still we all had a great day and ended the year on a high (at the pub)
